There’s nothing more fun than watching a baby discover cake for the first time. Hence the reason this central Michigan cake smash session was so good. Shot in my studio with a clean white backdrop, this session kept things simple, sweet (literally), and totally focused on the birthday boy (and his icing-covered hands).

The setup was intentionally minimalist: just one happy baby, a pure white backdrop, and a homemade cake front and center. No clutter. No distractions. Just fun, joyful moments captured as they unfolded.

A Sweet Cake Smash Session in My Central Michigan Studio

The cake itself was a true labor of love. It was multi-colored, and decorated by the baby’s older siblings, which made it even more special. But what made the session so entertaining was that the birthday boy wasn’t quite sure what to do with it at first! He spent a full ten minutes just staring at the cake, poking at the icing, and then wiping it off on the clean white paper behind him. 😂

To keep the focus on his expressions and little movements, the baby wore nothing but a diaper. It made for the cutest photos (and a quick cleanup, too)! Once he finally got a mouthful of that cake, though… game over. He went wild with excitement and couldn’t stop eating. It was the best kind of mess, and we captured every second.

Why I Love Minimalist Cake Smash Sessions

Sometimes less really is more. This shoot was a great reminder that you don’t need a ton of props or elaborate themes to make a session meaningful. A clean background and a genuine moment can say so much, and let your little one’s personality take center stage.
